If a black female — born
into slavery in 1819, illiterate, said to have suffered from
narcolepsy from a blow to the head at the age of 12
inflicted by a white overseer — can risk her life on many
numerous occasions to bring over 300 slaves from slavery
to freedom on the underground railroad, what kind of
possible excuse do we have today for not reaching back and
bring others along with us?
And we’re not even asking you to risk your life over and
over and over again like Harriet Tubman. We’re only asking
for your time. There are those out there in the community
who are already doing what they can to reach and teach
others. And there are many more in positions to do so, but
don’t necessarily know where to start.
Welcome to the
The Community Network (TCN)
Do
you know someone who is making a difference in Austin? Or
making a contribution to the well-being and advancement of
black owned or managed businesses in the community? If so,
you can nominate them (or even nominate yourself) for
inclusion here in The Community Network!
We created The Community Network to notice and recognize the movers and
shakers who are on the the frontlines advocating for our
community on a daily basis. We want to demonstrate and
highlight that Central Texas has a large number of black
folks with all sorts of resources, information and
connections.
And more importantly, we want to leverage TCN to allow you to
be able to tap directly into this powerful network of doers.
The main criteria for inclusion in TCN is an individual’s
willingness to be a resource of knowledge and connections to
others looking to make a way. Pedigrees (job title,
income, level of education, etc.) carry no weight in regards
to who gets listed. Only a commitment to reaching back
and uplifting others.
All TCN Profiles will be recognized with a photo, brief bio,
why they were nominated and a link to their business and/or
organization. Each month, TCN will highlight three of the
profiles. Additionally, we will maintain an archive of all
TCN Profiles that you can assess 24 hours a day.
To nominate someone — or yourself —
complete and submit the form.
